Midwife on CANAL+: but by the way, what do you call a man a midwife?

On CANAL+ and myCANAL from November 14, Sage-Homme shines the spotlight on the midwifery profession, through the eyes of a man. The opportunity to look at how to name those who practice this profession in the masculine gender.

It is one of the strongest and most beautiful films of the year 2023. Released last March, Sage-Homme is already broadcast this November 14 on CANAL+, and available on myCANAL.

A gripping and moving dive into the world of obstetric medicine, this feature film by Jennifer Devoldere paints the portrait of Léopold. Played by Melvin Boomer (66.5), this student fails his medical entrance exam.

A midman or a midwife?

Entering midwifery school by default and hiding the truth from those around him, he enters the corridors of a hospital to meet these patients and future mothers. Entering this almost exclusively female environment, he is taken under the wing of Nathalie (Karin Viard), an experienced and passionate midwife, who will make him drop all his preconceptions about this profession and shake up his certainties.

Realistic without forgetting to be positive and rhythmic, avoiding falling into pathos, Sage-Homme highlights this profession in the most beautiful way, and overturns the codes by integrating a man. “The latter, however, remain a very minority with only 4.5% of active midwives. Most of these men work in hospitals. None are teachers“, explains the director.

Proof of this is this rarity, and even if training to practice this specialty has been open to men since 1982, most people can be mistaken in wrongly calling them “midmen”. If we can call them midwives (the term “wise” meaning expertise, and therefore knowledge of women), the correct term is “meeutician”. A word to remember if we want to be able to use it even more, and thus democratize the place of men in this beautiful profession!

Sage-Homme is available now and exclusively on myCANAL.
