Australian actress Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) is the new Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, in the cinema. It will make its first appearance in 2025 in Superman: Legacythen will be showing in his own film in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Milly Alcock succeeds Melissa Benoist (Supergirlthe series), Laura Vandervoort (Smallville), Helen Slater (Supergirlthe 1984 film) Sasha Calle (Flash) in the iconic role of Kara — becoming the new Supergirl. The casting was made official by Deadline on January 29, 2024. The Australian actress will actually star in the next DC Comics film, titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Previously, she became known in the role of Rhaenyra Targaryen, in the spin-off of Game Of Thrones dedicated to the Targaryens, House of the Dragon. The role was almost obtained by Meg Donnelly, who voices Supergirl in two DC Comics animated series.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
The casting took place for Superman: Legacy, the first film in the new DC Comics universe on the big screen, developed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. This film will star David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan in the roles of Clark Kent (Superman) and Loïs Lane. But it will also introduce a brand new version of Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock.
This incarnation of the famous Kryptonian, Kara Zor-El, will not say her last word in this feature film scheduled for summer 2025: she will then be entitled to her own film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The latter should be an adaptation of the comics of the same name.
In James Gunn’s universe, superheroes and superheroines will already be established. We know that there will be no question of origin story for the characters. David Corenswet’s Superman and Milly Alcock’s Supergirl therefore already know each other a priori. Not much more is known about the history of Woman of Tomorrow.
In the comics of the same name, Supergirl is at the dawn of her 21st year and is going through an existential crisis, in Superman’s shadow. She then meets, in a tavern where she drowns her sorrows, an alien: Ruthye. The only girl in a family, Ruthye is on a quest for revenge after her father’s murder.
Written by Tom King, this comicbook is reputed to be quite psychological, while giving Supergirl its credentials – in all her benevolence, but also all her power. We know that DC adaptations for cinema take particular liberties with the comics, so it is difficult to know to what extent the film Woman of Tomorrow will look like this. But, in any case, this looks like a good starting point for a new, original version of Kara.
Even if we can regret that Sasha Calle did not have his chance to shine beyond the very mediocre FlashMilly Alcock seems cut out for this iconic costume.
