Minecraft live-action movie (re)confirmed for April 4, 2025 with Jason Momoa in lead role

Considering the director’s pedigree, Minecraft will obviously be an assumed comedy. Jared Hess served on Napoleon Dynamiteremained cult in the United States for its pastiche of the culture nerd and its vagaries in high school. However, his second project Nacho Libre had bided quite strongly, despite the presence of Jack Black and his infectious energy. Jared Hess passes after a long list of candidates: Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum), Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and finally Peter Sollett (One Night in New York) . After the departure of Sollett in 2022, Hess and Momoa both signed last April, and seem to have decided to smooth the last angles to bring this project to fruition.

Creative Mode

On the casting side, the GiantFreakinRobot site reports that, according to their sources, actress Sydney Sweeney would be courted to play the main female character. Not much noticed in the cinema, Sweeney is best known on television for the roles of Cassie inEuphoria and Olivia Mossbacher in The White Lotus. A little rising star for whom the film Minecraft would be a good entry point into all-audience blockbusters. Of course, it is still only a noise of corridor; in the absence of solid information, these whispers confirm that things are stirring behind the scenes.

As surprising (and disturbing) as it is, the film Minecraft will not be the first narrative version of Mojang’s sandbox. The former Telltale Games, before takeover and reconstruction, had tackled Minecraft: Story Mode, an episodic saga in two seasons detailing the cubic adventures of Jesse, an ordinary villager, who fights to reconstitute the mythical Order of the Stone and stop the cataclysmic wither storm. After the legal and financial setbacks of its developer, the project was removed from online stores in 2019, and the few physical copies that are still around will soon be collector’s items.

See you on April 4, 2025 to find out if a square Earth can make sense in live.
