Misfortune in Tyrol – climber fell to his death while approaching the icefall

A tragic alpine accident occurred on Sunday morning in the Ammergau Alps near Reutte in the Tyrolean town of Ausserfern. An ice climber fell to his death in front of a comrade.

At around 10:30 a.m., the alpinist and a climbing partner were still on the approach to the actual icefall in the steep terrain in the area of the Geierköpfe northeast of Lake Plansee. Carried away by snow. For an unknown reason, snow suddenly broke off above the two-person rope team and dragged the two alpinists into the depths. The rope then got caught, so the fall was stopped. While one of the two winter sports athletes only suffered minor injuries in the fall, any help came too late for the second man. He died at the scene of the accident. Nothing is currently known about the identities of the two climbers. The accident occurred near the Bavarian border.
