Mockery of neighbor Armenia: Aliyev opens macabre war museum

Scorn for neighbor Armenia
Aliyev opens macabre war museum

Half a year after the end of the fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijani President Aliyev opened a museum that will deal with the history of the conflict. The main aim of this, however, is apparently to mock the victims on the Armenian side.

The Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev opened a museum six months after the end of the war to commemorate his successful campaign against Armenia in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. However, the museum apparently shows no Azerbaijani successes and does not provide any information on the history of the conflict with the unloved neighbor Armenia, but is only intended to mock the opponent.

A photo by the US journalist Neil Hauer shows Aliyev walking in full military uniform along an avenue made of the helmets of dead Armenian soldiers. The macabre installation is intended to be one of the heart of the new exhibition. Additional photos on the journalist’s Twitter account show wax models of Armenian soldiers in dead or dying pose. Other pictures show captured uniforms, vehicles and other equipment.

The conflict, in which Azerbaijan was able to recapture large parts of the area, which the country had to cede to Armenia in a similar war almost 30 years ago, lasted from September 27 to November 9, 2020. Around 6,000 people lost it in the roughly six-week conflict Life.

While the dispute in Azerbaijan is seen as a success, the losses in Armenia sparked a deep domestic political crisis, as the majority of citizens blame the country’s head of government, Nikol Pashinyan, for the defeat. Just last week, his government lifted the state of war again after agreeing with the opposition on new elections on June 20.
