While Fifa announced that the 2030 Football World Cup would be played on three continents (Europe, Africa and America), some public figures denounced this decision. Like Dominique Rocheteau, former glory of AS Saint-Etienne and guest of the show “Le studio des Légendes”, who explains this by “financial reasons”.

One World Cup, three continents. On October 4, Fifa announced that it had reached an agreement with the European, African and South American football confederations around a single candidacy for the 2030 World Cup. Apart from the opening matches which will take place in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, the 2030 World Cup will take place in Morocco, Spain and Portugal. For the occasion, Dominique Rocheteau, one of the legends of the “Greens” of Saint-Etienne and the French football team, spoke on the show The studio of legends and looks back on Fifa’s decision to play the World Cup on three continents.

“The image of football takes a hit”

Questioned on the subject, the former French international immediately took a position. “For me, it’s only for financial reasons and to please certain countries. A World Cup must be played in one country, or even two, but not in three continents,” assures Dominique Rocheteau at Jacques Vendroux’s microphone. The latter also specifies that Fifa could have its official headquarters in Paris for tax reasons. “We are losing a lot of things right now, it’s not good at all,” worries the journalist.

For Dominique Rocheteau, “the image of football is taking a hit, we have to be careful”. “I am in the stadiums, I meet people who, more and more, tell me that they prefer to go watch a rugby match,” laments the former Saint-Etienne player.
