In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the EU put more than 20 people close to Putin on the sanctions list.
The EU, the USA and Switzerland have imposed sanctions on several of Putin’s friends and Russian businessmen. As a result, bank accounts and assets such as yachts or houses in these countries can be confiscated or bank accounts can be frozen. The authorities have been active in the past few days. An overview.
Andrei Melnichenko
Italian authorities arrested another Russian billionaire yacht on Friday. The “Sailing Jacht A”, estimated at around 530 million euros, is located in the port of Trieste and belongs to the Russian magnate Andrei Melnichenko.
Alexei Mordashov
The luxury yacht “Lady M” of the Russian billionaire Alexei Mordashov was confiscated due to the latest EU sanctions in the Ligurian port of Imperia. According to the Italian authorities, it is worth 65 million euros.
Gennady Timchenko
Only about thirty kilometers away, the Italian police confiscated the next yacht. In Sanremo, “Lena” from longtime Putin confidant and billionaire Gennady Timchenko was confiscated. According to the government, the ship is worth 50 million euros.
Igor Sechin
Another close confidant of Putin is Rosneft boss Igor Sechin. His 88-meter-long yacht “Amore Vero” was confiscated by French customs in the French Mediterranean port of La Ciotat shortly before it cast off. It was originally supposed to be repaired there by April. But because of the sanctions, the crew had immediately prepared to leave the port – regardless of the repair work that had not yet been completed.
Alisher Usmanov
The situation surrounding the $600 million yacht owned by Russian magnate Alisher Usmanov is a little more opaque. According to a media report in Hamburg, the “Dilbar” was confiscated, but the German authorities have not confirmed this. According to the Hamburg Economic Authority, the almost 160-meter-long motor yacht is owned by a Maltese holding company and is being repaired by the Hamburg shipowner.
Oleg Savchenko
The confiscated luxury goods also include the Villa Lazzareschi near Lucca in Tuscany. It belongs to the Russian politician Oleg Savchenko and is valued at 3 million euros.
Nikolai Tokarev
The Russian magnate Nikolai Tokarev is also on the EU sanctions list. But it was not his villa that was chained, but that of his daughter Maya Nikolaevna. According to the Croatian authorities, the confiscated property is Villa Karolina on the picturesque island of Lošinj.
Morosow Collection
The famous Morosow collection, which is currently being exhibited in Paris, has not yet been confiscated. However, the confiscation of the Russian state collection is being hotly debated on social media. As the conservative French newspaper “Le Figaro” reports, some are demanding their “seizure”, others even want to sell them by force and use the money to buy weapons for Ukraine. The exhibition’s namesake, Ivan Morosow, was one of the most important collectors of French avant-garde art around 1900.
Roman Abramovich
Other than the confiscated yachts, many Russian-owned luxury ships have already left Europe. This also applies to the 162-meter-long “Eclipse” by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. The 400 million monster is now in St. Martin in the Caribbean.
Wladimir Putin
The location of Vladimir Putin’s yacht “Graceful” is also not surprising. Even before the attack on Ukraine, the Russian President had his ship brought back to Russia. Now the port of Kaliningrad is bobbing and remains inaccessible to the western authorities.
