Motorcyclist and passenger die in an accident on the Bernina Pass

On Monday afternoon, a car collided with a motorcycle while overtaking at the Bernina Pass. The motorcyclist and his passenger died at the scene of the accident.

The accident on the Berninastrasse happened shortly after 2:45 p.m. As the Graubünden cantonal police announced on Tuesday, a 52-year-old motorcyclist and his 57-year-old passenger were traveling down the Berninastrasse from La Rösa towards San Carlo. Behind the motorcycle followed a 40-year-old Italian and a 28-year-old Swiss with their cars. At the Plana Scüra location, the two drivers started to overtake. The two cars collided with each other. One of the vehicles hit the motorcycle. The motorcyclist fell onto the road and his passenger fell over the crash barrier into an adjacent meadow embankment. The two were so badly injured that they died on the spot. The rescue workers on site could not do anything for them, the message said.

Berninastrasse was closed after the accident and reopened at 7 p.m. The Graubünden canton police are looking for people who were able to observe the course of the accident or who can provide information on the driving style of the vehicles involved.
