For several months, we have been waiting to hear from him. Surprise, Lenovo today announces the launch of the new generation of its folding model, the Motorola Razr (2022). A high-end smartphone that could, perhaps, integrate the short list of best folding smartphones in 2022.

In July, the general manager of Lenovo’s mobile branch, Chen Jin, showed the public the next Motorola Razr (2022), without going too far in the presentation of its technical sheet. This Tuesday, October 25, the brand under the Chinese flag officially launches its new high-end model whose ambition is clear: to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Motorola Razr (2022): an 8% larger screen

The mobile branch of Lenovo today announced the marketing of the new generation of its folding smartphone, the Motorola Razr version 2022. Very professional looking, the device is smaller, lighter and more compact than its predecessor. Unfolded, it offers a large internal pOLED screen of 6.7 inches, on which we can see with pleasure the disappearance of the notch in favor of a punch to house the selfie sensor.

Changes that allow the Motorola Razr (2022) to benefit from an 8% larger screen than the previous version of the smartphone. As for the characteristics of this HDR10+ certified panel, note that it offers FHD+ definition and that it is clocked at 144 Hz. For color display, Motorola adopts DCI-P3 and offers a color depth of 10 bits . The 2.7-inch external touch screen can be configured with a series of widgets.

Use the smartphone from all angles

The hinge of the Motorola Razr (2022) adopts the Flex View technology developed by the mobile branch of Lenovo. The principle is simple: the opening angle of the smartphone is adjustable to allow it to hold in all positions. Thus, it is possible to open it only to 45° – and it will maintain this position, without shaking – to comfortably take selfies or even make videoconference calls.

Moreover, on the photography side, the smartphone offers an interesting configuration, even better on paper than that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. This remains to be confirmed with a test. On the back of the device, there is a main sensor of 50 megapixels (1/1.5”, 2.0 µm) with omnidirectional autofocus and optical image stabilization. It is accompanied by a 13 megapixel sensor acting as ultra wide-angle and macro sensor.

The manufacturer promises successful shots, even in low light conditions thanks to the Quad Pixel mode, which captures four times more light, and its 32x more pixels used for focusing. The main sensor can shoot videos in 8K and HDR10+. At the front, in the punch that now replaces the iconic notch of the Razr range, the manufacturer offers a 32-megapixel selfie sensor.

Obviously, a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1

The Motorola Razr (2022) is a high-end smartphone and, like the Motorola edge 30 Ultra, it features the superstar SoC of the moment, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 from Qualcomm. It is supported by 8 GB of RAM and coupled with 256 GB of internal storage memory, not expandable via a microSD card. Of course, the smartphone includes the Ready For function which allows you to wirelessly connect your smartphone to a monitor or television in order to take advantage of all its power on a larger display.

What about autonomy? The smartphone is equipped with a 3,500 mAh battery allowing it, according to the manufacturer, to last a little more than a day without recharging. The Motorola Razr (2022) is not compatible with wireless charging; it is imperative to go through USB-C, with a 33W charging block. Let’s finish with the audio: the device has two stereo speakers with multi-dimensional sound in Dolby Atmos. We hope they are as good as those of the edge 30 Ultra model.

Motorola Razr (2022) price and availability

The Motorola Razr (2022) is available today, Tuesday October 25, at the recommended retail price of 1,199 euros. Only one color is offered by the manufacturer, namely Satin Black. When it comes out, it runs Android 12 and Lenovo’s mobile arm says it will get two major Android upgrades and three years of security patches. For a smartphone at this price, and with the imminent deployment of Android 13, it seems quite light.

Questioned on this subject, Motorola specifies that these durations are the minimum that the manufacturer undertakes to ensure: the smartphone may benefit from longer support, but nothing is certain.
