Movember, a portmanteau word made up of the words “mustache” and “november”, and above all an operation to raise awareness of men’s mental health, suicide prevention and prostate and testicular cancers. “Generally, men die 4 to 5 years earlier than women and from causes that can be largely avoided. Which means that this does not have to be true: we can all mobilize to live healthier, healthier lives. happier and longer lives”, indicates the Movember association on its website.
Since 2003, the association, which is mobilizing to change the face of men’s health, has funded more than 1,250 research projects around the world.
The mustache as a symbol of commitment
Every year, more than 1.4 million prostate cancers are recorded worldwide, making this disease the second most common cancer among men. Concerning testicular cancer, it is, in more than 95% of cases, cured through treatments. The rest unfortunately do not benefit from these positive results. This is why they invented: Movember. A challenge consisting of growing a mustache for 30 days in order to raise awareness among the general public of male pathologies and raise funds for medical research.
Based on the observation that men are less attentive to their health than women, growing a mustache represents the symbol of a commitment to men’s health and a way of attracting attention and sparking discussions. At the same time, many events are organized all over the world such as running races, concerts, rallies. Challenges are also offered.
How to participate?
To participate in Movember, you will need to register on the association’s website. Once registered, you will access your Mo Space and you will be considered a MoBro, the nickname given to official participants. On November 1st, shave clean and then let your mustache grow all month. Take photos of your mustache progress and post them on your social media. Then go looking for donations.
