The big folk festivals in Bavaria should not take place in 2021 due to the corona pandemic. The Oktoberfest in Munich is canceled.

After a video switch between the mayors of large cities in Bavaria and Prime Minister Markus Söder (54) on May 3, it is clear that the Oktoberfest in Munich will not take place again in 2021. In a joint press conference Munich’s Mayor Dieter Reiter (62) announced with Söder: “The tendency was clearly that we as local politicians simply assume this responsibility for our population […] must weight higher than the legitimate and understandable interest of the population in folk festivals. And that’s why there won’t be an Oktoberfest in Munich this year either. ”

This is a “shame” for worldwide fans of the event, as well as for people who would otherwise work there and have to complain about a loss of income – and for riders personally it is “not an easy decision”. He beg your forbearance.

It “would be irresponsible”

“The situation is too uncertain,” Söder had previously stated. Allowing large folk festivals could also lead to “sometimes chaotic circumstances”. For example, it is “practically impossible to implement” that such a large number of people adhere to the requirement to wear a mask and keep sufficient distances. Although the decision rests with the municipalities, it is recommended that none of the large folk festivals take place. Decentralized solutions could possibly serve as a substitute.

Wiesn boss Clemens Baumgärtner (44) recently stated in an interview with the news agency spot on news that he sees little chance for the Oktoberfest in 2021: “From today’s perspective, it is not responsible to hold the Oktoberfest. If you look at it, which basic requirements have to be met for the Oktoberfest, then they simply are not at the moment. […] It would be irresponsible to hold an Oktoberfest that could be dangerous. And its reputation as a place of joy and fun would also be forever damaged. ”
