musician demands $20 million for hit ‘All I Want For Christmas is You’

While she has just launched the season of her hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, Mariah Carey is once again accused of plagiarism. The 54-year-old singer is once again the subject of a complaint filed by Andy Stone, a musician who, with his group, was a hit with a song of the same name in 1989…

We have just entered the time of year when the song All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey is a global anthem. Every year, the day after Halloween, the famous American singer kicks off the countdown before the end-of-year holidays… and tradition requires listening to his emblematic hit to wait. Released in 1994, this cult song that everyone knows brings in around 2.5 million dollars each year for Mariah Carey, or more than 65 million since its release.

However, the 54-year-old singer has been accused of plagiarism for several years by Andy Stone, a musician who, in 1989, released a Christmas song also called All I Want for Christmas is You. If it was a success at the time of its release and during the following years, the title was then stolen by that of Mariah Carey… whose words and tune are somewhat similar.

Mariah Carey accused of plagiarism: the solid arguments of the musician who files a complaint

In 2022, Andy Stone sued Mariah Carey for copyright infringement. “The combination of specific chord progression in the melody coupled with the lyrics is over 50% clone” he proclaimed during a first trial before dropping the charges. However this year, Andy Stone and the co-author of the title, Walter Afanasieff decided to file a complaint again, while recalling that the singer deliberately copied the famous phrase All I Want for Christmas is Youtaken from their song.

They also state thatit’s impossible that Mariah Carey hasn’t heard their song which enjoyed “widespread commercial and cultural success” from 1989 to 19994… year when she released her version. Andy Stone is rightly demanding $20 million in damages from the singer.
