summary

What is the MWC in Barcelona?

The Mobile World Congress or MWC for short is one of the largest tech fairs in the world. It takes place every year in February in Barcelona. Unlike other big fairs like the CES in Las Vegas or the IFA in Berlin, the MWC focuses exclusively on innovations in the field of mobile phones. Many big brands use the event to present their latest product and service innovations.

Despite the fact that the major manufacturers have increasingly presented their products at their own events in recent years, the MWC remains a must for anyone interested in smartphones, tablets and the like. However, one has to admit that the organization looks back on two very complicated years in view of the health situation. Although the MWC 2021 took place as a face-to-face event, it was postponed from February to June, with numerous cancellations such as that by Google. And the 2020 edition was simply cancelled.

When and where will the MWC 2022 take place?

The MWC 2022 will take place from February 28th to March 3rd, 2022 in Barcelona. This has been happening there every year since 2006 and at least until 2023. The fair takes place in the Fira Gran Via, the exhibition center in Barcelona. Last year, the GSMA, the organization of the MWC, reported that 120,000 people attended MWC 2021, 20,000 of them physically.

Kicking off on Monday February 28th at 9am CET is Honor’s conference as they plan a global product launch. The fair is open to the public, but the Ticket prices start at a whopping 700 euros.

So that you don’t miss anything even without tickets, NextPit will keep you up to date on all news related to the MWC. You can also take a look at the official calendar of events. Is there a keynote that particularly interests you? Let us know in the comments and we’ll keep an eye on it for you!

MWC 2022: These companies will be there

In this section we have only listed the manufacturers that have officially or at least publicly confirmed that they will be participating in MWC 2022.

honor

Honor will hold a keynote titled “The Power of Magic” on February 28 at 9 a.m. CET and introduce new products. Including probably a new smartphone series. On the manufacturer’s official website, the time is given as 1 p.m. But we prefer to rely on the schedule of the trade fair organization.

As a reminder, the company recently unveiled the Magic V in China. So that would be a candidate for a global launch.

Huawei

Although Huawei has lost its importance, it will still be represented at the MWC 2022. The Chinese tech giant will hold several events themed “Lighting up the future.”

According to androidgadget the manufacturer is expected to introduce the Mate X3. At least that’s what CEO Derek Yu announced in an interview with a Romanian medium. Huawei recently introduced the P50 Pro and P50 Pocket in Europe, so it’s very unlikely that the manufacturer will surprise with another flagship. You can read the company’s official invitation directly on the official website.

xiaomi

Xiaomi’s plans for the MWC 2022 are not yet known. The manufacturer recently unveiled the Xiaomi 12 range, which is already being sold in China. However, we do not know whether the global launch will take place at a separate event – or as part of the MWC. The manufacturer has at least opposite TechRadar confirmed its participation in the MWC 2022.

oppo

Oppo also confirmed its participation in MWC 2022 to TechRadar. A company spokesman explains:“We are pleased to confirm that OPPO will be attending MWC 2022 and we are also looking forward to showcasing our latest innovations in Barcelona”.

The company could unveil its new flagship smartphones, the Find X4 Pro, X4 Neo and X4 Lite. We expect a high-class spec sheet including Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and an AMOLED display with LTPO 2.0 technology. The camera highlight could be the integration of the MariSilicon X – an NPU that is supposed to improve the image quality.

Nokia

Nokia will indeed be present at MWC 2022, as can be seen on the official website. In Barcelona, the company wants to “break the boundaries”. At least that’s what the slogan “Breaking boundaries in Barcelona” promises. However, don’t expect any product announcements in the smartphone space. Rather, the announcements will focus on network solutions.

realme

The young Chinese brand will also be present at MWC, as mentioned by the GSMA on its official website. Realme could present its new flagship for the European market there, the Realme GT 2 Pro.

With this smartphone, released in China at the beginning of January, Realme wanted to offer its first real flagship – and it did not disappoint. The smartphone is characterized above all by its supposedly environmentally friendly design, solid technical equipment and attractive price.

MWC 2022: These manufacturers have canceled or have not yet confirmed their participation

In this section we list the manufacturers who have officially confirmed that they will only be present virtually. You will also find the companies here that have already canceled their participation or whose attendance is not yet certain.

Sony

Sony once again stated that the Japanese would not participate in the MWC. The GSMA cynically stated that they were surprised by the announcement. After all, the Japanese group has not taken part in the fair since 2019. That means: After three years of absence in a row, participation would have been the real surprise.

OnePlus

The manufacturer has not yet commented on its possible presence. After the recent presentation of the OnePlus 10 Pro in China, we are also eagerly awaiting the European launch. However, it’s likely that OnePlus will opt for a separate event here. The fact that OnePlus is now under the Oppo umbrella does not make it more likely that it will have its own stand at the MWC.

Samsung

Samsung has not yet announced its participation in MWC 2022. The Korean manufacturer presented its new smartwatch OS One UI Watch there last year.

We don’t expect much for this year’s event. The Galaxy S21 FE has already been introduced. And we’ll see the Galaxy S22 series at its own event on February 9th. The hope for the presentation of the new A-Class or the Galaxy Tab S8 series including the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra also seems unlikely.

Lenovo

Lenovo officially canceled its physical participation in this year’s MWC due to the unstable health situation. However, they confirmed that the Chinese will be there virtually with a teaser on the official website and via Twitter:

Asus

Asus has opposite TechRadar confirmed the cancellation of this year’s MWC. The Taiwanese were last involved in 2018. It would therefore have been rather unusual if the brand’s upcoming smartphones, the Zenfone 9 and the ROG Phone 6, were revealed at MWC 2022 of all places. ASUS launch schedule isn’t really aligned with the tech fair in Barcelona.

Google

The Mountain View company wasn’t there last year. Participation this year is therefore rather unlikely. Google unveiled its flagship phones, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, last year. And Google prefers to save the unveiling of Android 13 for its own event, the Google I/O.

Motorola

So far, Motorola has not commented on its possible presence at the fair. It is known that the manufacturer is currently working on its Razr 3, but according to current rumors it will not be launched until September 2022.

As for the other brands like Vivo, TCL, Alcatel or even ZTE, there is no official announcement yet. If another company confirms its participation in the MWC 2022, we will keep you informed here.
