The noble, royal fabric as a nail design? Velvet nails are the latest craze from the USA. The velvety glow immediately convinced us at first sight – and that’s how you bring the nail polish trend to your home!

From Melanie Wenzke

What could be nicer than exploring the endless possibilities of nail polish? During the pandemic, we are forced to take our fate into our own hands. In need of a little variety? The velvet look is a real eye-catcher and at the same time a welcome twist for all fans of the monochrome!

Fluffy nails?

Although we can only practically feel the fluffy texture just by looking at the velvet nails, we unfortunately have to disappoint you on this point. Because the fabric look is “just” an illusion of light that results from the interplay of glitter and high-gloss nail polish. But that doesn’t make the look any less cool: When nail artist Amy Le shared a video of her design on Instagram, the velvet trend went viral.

The velvety effect looks best in direct sunlight. Because that’s where the different reflective nuances change most beautifully, so that you almost want to do without jewelry! The velvet look is best observed with lighter colors such as pink, champagne and pastel tones. But even this emerald green looks just irresistibly beautiful!

This is how it works

The nail artists use products such as Flocking Powder, Cat Eye Gel and Magnetic Gel Polish. The Japanese brand “Ice Gel’s” or the brand “Think of Nail Polish” from Korea, for example, are very popular with professionals. Not only is it difficult to work with professional paints, they are unfortunately not easy to get either.

It is therefore best to use UV varnishes such as those from Neonail or Pinkgellac. The manicure not only lasts longer, it also reflects the light more strongly. This gives you a more impressive velvet effect.

Four steps to a velvet dream
1. File your nails into shape and remove the cuticles. You will achieve the longest shelf life with a degreasing primer.
2. Apply a base coat.
3. Now apply a thin layer of a color of your choice.
4. Either you decide on an intense glitter varnish in the same shade of your chosen color. Or you can use an effect powder with glitter. Pro tip: If you use UV nail polish, you should remove the sweat layer before using a metallic powder. A thin layer with an eyeshadow applicator will do just fine.
5. The finish is a high-gloss top coat. Don’t hesitate to apply a second coat.

Of course, you have to cure the paint under a UV lamp after each layer if you have decided on this variant. Now nothing stands in the way of the Velvet Nails.
