Sharing one’s vehicle to get to one’s vacation spot seems obvious today, but it is much less so to go to work. According to a study, dating from April 2022 and carried out by Vinci Autoroutes, 8 out of 10 French people prefer to be alone in their car on the way to work. A trend calledautosolismthat the government wants to change.
For this, the daily’s national carpooling plan is launched on Tuesday, comprising 14 measures which will take effect from January 1, 2023.It focuses on short distance journeys, that is to say less than 80 kilometers and which are called to be renewed daily“, is it specified in the press release issued by the government.

A bonus of 100 euros
From the beginning of 2023, drivers who embark on daily carpooling for the first time will receive a bonus of 100 euros, donated by carpooling platforms. “A first part will be paid at the time of the 1st trip (25 euros minimum) and the rest on the 10th trip within three months.“, is it explained. In concrete terms, the 10 journeys of less than 80 kilometers must be completed within a maximum of three months to be able to receive this financial incentive. However, it is necessary to specify that this carpooling bonus may take the form of financial payments but also of purchase vouchers. A choice left to the discretion of carpooling platforms. This assistance will be available for 12 months.
But long-distance journeys are also affected by this bonus. It will be paid to new drivers who complete three journeys of more than 80 kilometers in three months. This measure will be financed by Energy Savings Certificates premiums which oblige energy suppliers to finance energy saving actions, under pain of penalties.
In addition, a new measure will be implemented within the framework of the Green Fund, to the tune of 50 million euros, to support local authorities in the development of carpooling. This could in particular make it possible to finance carpooling areas and lines, as well as preliminary studies.
Thanks to another envelope of 50 million euros, the government will also double the financial incentive already offered by certain communities to drivers and passengers. For example, for 1 euro given by the community per trip for the driver, the State will in turn add 1 euro. “This will encourage more communities to launch such schemes and those that are already doing so to continue them.“, is it claimed in the press release.

A national website dedicated to carpoolers should also see the light of day, in a second phase, to consolidate carpooling trip offers. The objective of this plan is to increase from 900,000 daily trips made by carpooling today, to 3 million by 2027.
