The former RAF terrorist Garweg went into hiding for decades. In Berlin he is said to have often visited an older woman. According to a media report, he apparently shopped for her and briefly had a key to her apartment.
The wanted ex-RAF terrorist Burkhard Garweg is said to have looked after an elderly woman. Her neighbors reported this to “Spiegel”. According to information from the magazine, the investigators also assume that Garweg repeatedly visited the woman in her apartment in Berlin-Friedrichshain.
The 55-year-old Garweg is said to have introduced himself there under the code name Martin. Her neighbors say he went shopping for the woman. It is unclear whether he received any money for it. Garweg also briefly had a key to the apartment while the woman was in the hospital. At first, no one in the house recognized him, only afterwards, after the police had made mugshots public.
On Monday morning, the police gained access to the woman’s apartment as part of the RAF search, but did not find any suspicious person. The raid is one of a series of searches that have taken place in Berlin since the weekend after former RAF terrorist Daniela Klette was caught in her apartment in Berlin-Kreuzberg.
Public prosecutor fears short-circuit action
The terrorists Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub, who are also wanted, are still on the run. The police are looking for them for attempted murder and aggravated robbery. The search is primarily focused on Garweg: the investigators have taken away his home, he is most likely traveling without logistics – and “really on the run”, which could be incriminating, warned a spokesman for the Verden public prosecutor’s office. His biggest concern is therefore a short-circuit act. He appealed to Garweg to turn himself in to avoid possible escalation.
Garweg is said to have temporarily lived in the trailer on the site in Berlin-Friedrichshain. The car was taken away for further investigation. This means that his environment is gone and the pressure on him is increasing, the public prosecutor said.
