Net profit down slightly for Monnaie de Paris, in the midst of social conflict

La Monnaie de Paris achieved a net profit in 2023 down 12% to 4.4 million euros, penalized by the minting of millions of non-compliant coins, a spokesperson told AFP on Wednesday.

The turnover of the public establishment which manufactures, among other things, coins amounts to 162.4 million euros, up 9% compared to 2022.

The company, in particular responsible for manufacturing medals for the 2024 Olympic Games, has also been facing a strike for around ten days against the backdrop of obligatory annual negotiations on salaries.

Management specified on Wednesday that 9% of employees are on strike, therefore 5% in production.

This movement has no impact on the manufacture of the medals which have been struck and which are being finished, specifies a spokesperson.

The net result of the Monnaie de Paris takes into account the cost of the centimes affair, estimated by an audit committee at 800,000 euros.

The company struck 27 million non-compliant parts last year. These millions of coins, however, represent less than 2% of the annual production of the Paris Mint.

The Minister of Economy and Finance, who sits on the board of directors of the public establishment, spoke to AFP of an internal dysfunction.
