Netflix: a release date and a price for the Essential subscription with advertising, and finally 720p in Essential

It’s been some time since netflix is considering offering a subscription with ads to reach a new audience with more affordable prices. Its competitor Disney+ positioned itself first by announcing a formula at $7.99 per month to come at the end of the year in the United States, taking the opportunity to raise the price of its other subscription methods.

netflix, which already raised its prices a year ago, will not go down this route. He just confirmed that he was going to launch the formula Essential with ad November 3 in 12 countries, including France, at a price of €5.99 per month. It will be offered alongside the subscriptions Essential, Standard and Premium at €8.99, €15.99 and €17.99 per month, based on I’Essentialwhich finally benefits from 720p after being limited to 480p. You will therefore have access to almost all the programs (some not currently available for copyright reasons), but still not to downloads, in exchange for an average ofa total of 4 to 5 minutes of advertising per hour before and during the programs.

We’re excited to announce the launch in November of Ad Essentials, Netflix’s most cost-effective package that includes ads.

  • Your favorite programs at an unbeatable price: Available from November 3 at 5:00 p.m., Essential with advertising will cost only €5.99 per month in France.
  • Available in 12 countries: Ad Essential will be available in Germany, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Korea, United States, Spain, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico and United Kingdom.
  • A package for everyone: No change for subscribers to our current offers. Essential with ads complements our existing line of ad-free plans: Essential, Standard and Premium.

Essential with ads offers the same options as Netflix’s Essential plan, with a few differences:

  • What does not change: a vast choice of series and films; a personalized experience; access to Netflix on most televisions and mobile devices; and the ability to change or cancel your plan at any time.
  • What’s different: Video quality up to 720p in HD (now offered on our Essential Ads and Essential plans); an average of 4 to 5 minutes of advertising per hour; some series and films not available due to rights restrictions on certain titles (but we are working on it); and downloading of offline programs not included.

In summary, Essential with ads is everything we love about Netflix, at a more attractive price and with some ads. From November, it will be possible to subscribe to this plan very easily: go to Netflix.com and register by providing certain information such as your e-mail address and your date of birth.

Essential with advertising is also an opportunity for advertisers to seize: the possibility of reaching a varied audience, in particular the youngest who watch television less and less, in an optimal and fluid environment with high-resolution advertising.

  • Ad Format: At launch, 15-30 second ads will run before and during programs.
  • Advertiser controls: To help advertisers reach their audience — and ensure our ads are relevant to consumers — we will offer broad targeting capabilities by country and program genre (action, drama, romance, sci-fi, etc. ). Advertisers will also have the ability to prevent their advertisements from being associated with programs that may be incompatible with their image (including, for example, images of sex, nudity or violence).
  • Verification tools: We have partnered with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to verify the viewability and validity of our ad traffic starting in Q1 2023.

The launch of Essential with ads comes just six months after we first announced a more economical package option. None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our teams and the partnership that binds us to Microsoft. The transition from linear television is occurring at an ever-increasing speed, with streaming now overtaking terrestrial and cable broadcasting in the United States. Accessible from €5.99 per month, Netflix now offers packages suitable for everyone. Although these are the very early days, we are already very pleased with the interest shown by both consumers and advertisers, and extremely excited to see what the future holds. With what we will learn from this experience, we have the ambition to then extend the offer to other countries.
