Generative AI is definitely everywhere, even among the productions of giants like Netflix. The latter is in fact accused of having used technology to create artificial images in a documentary.
If artificial intelligence very quickly won hearts thanks to its exceptional abilities, it also quickly aroused fears about its capacity to blur the line between reality and falsehood. A problem particularly illustrated by several cases of fraud. But this problem goes beyond the limits of the illegal world alone, with abusive use that can be found even among actors who are considered legitimate. Like Netflix.
The documentary “Jennifer’s Truths” indictment
Would Netflix have used false images created by AI to illustrate the documentary “The Truths of Jennifer”, which tells how Canadian Jenifer Pan orchestrated the assassination of her parents? That’s what the media claims anyway. Futurismwhich relies for this on various deformities in the images of young Jenifer, deformities characteristic of the use of generative AI.
We can see several anomalies in the image below, for example on the face of the young girl, whose cheek does not appear natural. But the bulk of the accusation rests, as often, on the hands. The fingers thus appear very deformed on the left, while the right limb, once the zoom is applied, looks like a stump topped with two “V” shaped fingers.
Some kind of manipulation impossible in the future?
It is possible that these images are additional material requested by Netflix in order to enhance the documentary, images produced from real photos of Jenifer Pan. For the moment, the world leader in streaming has not wished to provide comments, which inevitably increases the controversy.
If it were proven that these images were generated by AI, and that the same type of process was found elsewhere, it would not be surprising to see public authorities look into the problem in the future, to regulate. This is already what is currently happening with deepfakes, which the European Union, but also Great Britain, should ban in the future.
