Netflix shocker: Streaming service discontinues horror series after just one season

• Season 1 ended with some unanswered questions, but now Netflix surprisingly announced the early cancellation of the series.

With “Goosebumps at Midnight” (in the original: “The Midnight Club”), Mike Flanagan’s fourth horror series was released on the Netflix streaming service in October 2022. After a total of 10 episodes, the first season of the young-adult horror series ended with a few unanswered questions, pointing to a sequel. But now there is bad news for the fans, because Netflix has not renewed the series for a sequel.

The cancellation of “Goosebumps at Midnight” after just 10 episodes comes as quite a surprise, especially since the end of the season was obviously designed for a sequel. Flanagan had also previously announced in interviews that he had planned the series for several seasons because Christopher Pike’s youth books, on which the series is based, offer so much more material.

But now the series, which follows a group of terminally ill young people who experience bizarre things after one of their members dies, comes to an abrupt end. Apparently, the scary series just didn’t perform well enough and didn’t bring in the viewership it wanted. However, the stars didn’t align well for Flanagan’s horror contribution from the start, as the series had to compete with such Netflix hits as “The Watcher”, “Dahmer” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities”.

At the same time, it was announced that Mike Flanagan and his producing partner Trevor Macy, who previously co-created the series Haunted Hill House, Haunted Bly Manor and Midnight Mass at Netflix, have just signed a deal with Amazon Studios to have. This fact could also have contributed to the decision to end “Goosebumps at Midnight” prematurely.

But we don’t have to be very sad, because before that, “The Fall of the House of Usher” will be one of the duo’s last series projects on Netflix. This will be a modern staging of the well-known Edgar Allan Poe short story and will certainly teach us to fear again.
