This week-end, netflix made official season 2 of Squid Game, his already cult series which became the most popular program on the platform following its broadcast last fall. What if you thought the SVoD was already doing too much by renewing it when the plot was basically designed for a single season, you will probably raise your eyebrows when you hear the news of the day: the production of an ambitious reality show called Squid Game: The Challenge.
While the series denounces in particular the capitalist society where everything is good to earn money, until participating in games where the outcome is death for most of the participants, netflix will therefore reuse the theme (without killing the losers, don’t worry) by putting 4.56 million dollars into play. 456 candidates will be selected following castings open to all on a dedicated siteat least to English speakers.
It’s hard to see any real interest in it as a spectator compared to Takeshi’s Castle and other programs Intercity existing for ages, because even if the games were resumed as is, there would be no tension as to who is going to win. Yes, the Sword of Damocles floating above the heads of the series’ protagonists is integral to its success, as is the manipulation aspect. Unless you include participants who have to follow a specific script, it’s difficult to reproduce that and you might as well go back and see Koh Lanta… You only have to see the good-natured atmosphere of an attempt to replicate the games by the videographer MrBeastvery close to the show, but where seriousness is clearly not required.
By-products Squid Game are otherwise for sale on Amazonand it is probably not about to stop.
