It could have been a double whammy for Julia Roberts. While the American star is breaking records on Netflix with her latest film The World After Us, she was to be starring in another production, which is also a hit on the platform at the moment: Double Trap.

This thriller adapted from the novel by Harlan Coben is currently one of the most viewed series on the platform, close behind Berlin, the spin-off of La Casa de Papel. We follow the story of Maya, a former soldier, suddenly sees on a spy camera her husband whom she thought was murdered, she discovers a murderous conspiracy anchored deep in the past.
Before becoming a series, Double Trap had to be a film. In 2016, when Coben’s book hit the shelves, Julia Roberts discovered it and absolutely wanted to produce an adaptation: “It’s an exceptional story, driven by a strong female character” she will let you know. This is not the first time that the American author’s novels have been brought to the cinema – there was Tell No One in 2006 and One Chance Too Many in 2015 – and that the recipe works.
Unfortunately for Julia Roberts, the project will not move forward in its direction. Because rather than making a film, Coben favors the small screen format so as not to lose any of the plot which is spread over 400 pages. Which will not suit the former Pretty Woman who preferred to leave her place.
We will have to wait until 2023, 7 years after the project was announced, for the adaptation of Double Trap to see the light of day. Coben eventually teamed up with Netflix – which has signed on for 14 series adapted from his novels – to produce it.
