Netflix wants to disgust you with its basic package to attract you to ads


A year after the launch of Netflix with ads, it’s time to take stock. For the platform, this seems to be a certain success, so much so that the offer will be improved with a little less advertising for those who watch episodes of their favorite series.

Last November, Netflix launched its Standard subscription with advertising in France. All for a low price: 5.99 euros per month, not without some concessions. A year later, Standard with advertising attracts 15 million users per month worldwide according to Netflix. The SVoD platform announces slightly improving this subscription, by reducing the space of advertising for the biggest consumers.

After three episodes, the fourth will be ad-free

In a press release published by Netflix on November 1, we learn that from 2024 (first quarter), “ after three episodes watched in a row, subscribers will be able to watch the fourth episode without advertising“.

Enough to avoid disgusting fans ofbinge-watching, those who can’t help but binge episodes of a series. As a reminder, the Standard subscription with advertising “includes the broadcast of advertisements before or during most series and films»recalls Netflix. Ads last 10, 15, 20, 30 or 60 seconds. Moreover, the platform specifies that advertisements can now relate to “dating services, certain financial services and the pharmaceutical sector“.

Even Netflix subscribers with advertising will be able to download their content

Netflix’s other announcement concerns downloads. Until now, the Standard offer with advertising was the only one that did not allow you to download its content to watch it offline.

By the end of the week, users will be able to do this not on one device, but on two. All in 1080p: a few months ago, the quality offered by this offer was increased from 720p to 1080p.

Netflix’s Essential subscription becomes even less interesting: it could disappear

All this makes the Essential offer even less interesting than before, both for users and for Netflix apparently. A few months ago, the platform had hidden it in its price list. To display it, you must click on a button in order to have the complete comparative table. The quality of this subscription is still limited to 720p, it only gives access to one screen simultaneously (compared to two for the Standard offer with advertising) and to one device for downloads (compared to two also for the offer Standard with advertising).

The last element that makes the Netflix Essential subscription even less interesting: the increase in its price. It cost 8.99 euros until now, but is now offered at 10.99 euros. Two euros more, as for the Premium subscription, while the Standard and Standard subscriptions with advertising have not increased. In fact, this subscription could well disappear and no longer be offered by Netflix: this is what happened in the United States and Canada. The Standard offer with advertising seems to have a good future ahead of it.
