Netflix: Why The XO Kitty Spin-Off Is Better Than The To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before Movies

It’s a very nice surprise that Netflix gave us with XO Kitty, the spin-off of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, co-written by Jenny Han herself.

What is it about ?

Kitty Song Covey thinks she knows everything about love. When she travels to the other side of the world to find her boyfriend Dae, she realizes that relationships are much more complicated than it seems.

Who is it with?

Do you remember Kitty, the little sister of Lara Jean in the saga To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before? But yes, this little girl with thick glasses and pigtails? Well she has grown up!

Anna Cathcart is the headliner of her own series and she is flying to Korea on this occasion. Among the cast, we recognize certain faces including that of Yunjin Kim (Sun in Lost) and the little Frenchy Théo Augier Bonaventure (Les Grands).

Worth a look?

We weren’t expecting much from XO, Kitty, especially after seeing the trailer. It must be said that of the entire cast of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, he was one of the least interesting characters… if not the most unbearable.

But Netflix subscribers did not seem to want to miss the meeting since a few days after its release, the series was already 2nd in the top. Something to intrigue us…

Unlike the film saga with Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, XO Kitty is not the adaptation of Jenny Han’s books, but the author actively participated in the writing of this series of 10 episodes, which surprises us to be continued… to finally watch it in a weekend. Contrary to what the trailer may suggest, it does not only tell us about romance and small love affairs.

Even though the story centers on Kitty and Dae, her pen pal/boyfriend, the characters that evolve around them are particularly endearing: from Yuri, daughter of the principal of the Kiss school who is hiding a secret, to Min Ho , a playboy who asks only to be loved passing by the adorable Q…

By offering a cast of queer characters and a heroine that doesn’t fit into boxes, Xo Kitty reminds us of Heartstopper, another heart-warming Netflix production.

By taking her ticket to Korea, Kitty not only wanted to find Dae but also to learn a little more about her mother, who died when she was younger. Lara Jean already talked about it in the film trilogy and we get to know her thanks to XO Kitty.

Our heroine goes back the thread of her story and makes surprising discoveries about the one she doesn’t know much about. The whole thing is moving enough to bring tears to your eyes, if you’re the sensitive type.

XO Kitty is a pleasant surprise, not dripping with cuteness like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Refreshing and touching when needed, it is one of those feel good series with which we like to spend time. If the success is confirmed for the spin-off, a season 2 could well see the light of day.
