new controversy over girls’ clothes in college

A new sartorial precision in the internal regulations has sown trouble in a college in Yonne. For the students as for the teachers, it is incomprehension.

A small modification and a whole establishment is set ablaze. At the André Leroi-Gourhan college in Vermenton (Yonne), the management has just added a precision to its internal regulations concerning the clothing of its students, cas reported by France Bleu. Originally, article 7.2.4 of the internal regulations stipulated that “everyone must adopt a correct and decent outfit […] excluding anything that could be akin to provocation “.

In recent days, this part of the text has changed. Management now indicates: “no skirt or Bermuda shorts above the knees, shorts, crop-tops are banned (short t-shirts, editor’s note), and ‘the great neckline’ ”. “A T-shirt will be loaned to the student for the day, and the family will be notified“concludes this new rule.

A decision that penalizes girls

This instruction, considered stigmatizing, does not really pass for some teachers. Andréa *, professor in the establishment interviewed by France Bleu reacts. “What does that say to young boys? That girls’ bodies can be sexualized, and that an outfit can justify sexual assault?” she says. “We know very well that boys will be less used on their outfits than young girls. And with such rules, we participates in the culture of rape“She concludes. On the side of the students, and especially the girls, the incomprehension is the same, this precision does not make any sense.”Why always want to tell us how to dress? Our bodies belong to us, an arm, a thigh, a calf it’s just a body, nothing else“confides Marianne *, a 3rd year student.

This instruction is reminiscent of the various debates launched in September 2020. Following several reprimands or temporary exclusions due to outfits deemed indecent, hundreds of French high school girls gathered around a Tik Tok challenge # Monday14september , to fight against the prevailing sexism. All had shown up at their establishment in mini-skirts, shorts and crop tops. Dozens of them had also been refused entry to high school, but whatever, their little revolution had not gone unnoticed. Will it have to come to this again for girls to stop being sexualized through their clothes?
