New PlayStation 5 firmware beta adds voice chat via Discord

Sony has just launched the beta version of the next PS5 firmware update. Players will benefit from a few additional functions, the first of which is the presence of voice chat from Discord instant messaging. If you regularly play online with your group of friends, you already know that it is possible to communicate orally by launching the famous “party”. But this system only worked between users of PlayStation consoles. Thanks to Discord voice chat, it is now possible to talk to people playing on other platforms. If this addition does not seem to be revolutionary, it still makes sense when you know that cross-platform online gaming is gaining momentum lately. Since its 2022 version, the very popular Fifafor example, allows PlayStation players to compete against Xbox or PC players.

A good resolution for 2023

The firmware beta also sees the arrival of 1440p VRR (Variable Refresh Rate); an evolution of the VRR which was launched on PS5 last April. Of course, to benefit from this feature intended to make games more beautiful and more fluid, you will need to have a compatible television (or any other device intended to display images). In this regard, note that the developers have integrated an option to test the compatibility of the equipment connected to the console.

In addition to these two major new features, there are a few minor improvements in terms of general ergonomics. It will be easier to join friends in game and ask them to share a screen. Note also the addition of PS VR and PS VR2 filters in the library to find them easily, but also easier PS5 to PS5 saved data transfers, as well as improved management of PS5 game save transfers to PS4 or PS4 to PS5 . Finally, the youngest, the DualSense Edge controller, can be updated without having to connect it to the console.
