New resignation of the head of government in Peru

The President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, announced on the night of Thursday 24 to Friday 25 November to accept the resignation of his Prime Minister, Anibal Torres, after the right-wing-dominated parliament denied him a vote of confidence.

I have accepted the resignation of the Prime Minister, whom I thank for his work for the country, and will appoint a new government“said President Castillo in a message broadcast on public television. This resignation comes in full new confrontation between the executive of the left and the Parliament, dominated by the opposition of the right.

Two impeachment attempts

President Castillo, in power since July 2021, has already faced two impeachment attempts in Parliament and is the subject of six investigations for alleged corruption, of which his family and his political entourage are also accused. He denounces a political campaign and currently enjoys immunity until the end of his term in July 2026.

A few hours before the Prime Minister’s resignation was announced, the Speaker of Parliament, José Williams, announced his “categorical refusalto grant the vote of confidence requested by the left-wing prime minister. Anibal Torres, a 79-year-old lawyer, is the fourth head of government to step down since President Castillo took office 16 months ago.
