New scam – Executive warns of calls from fake police officers

A 30-year-old Syrian in Linz was apparently able to fend off an attempted fraud just in time by becoming suspicious and hanging up on the phone. A caller introduced herself as a Federal Police investigator and asked for his information. According to the police, there are currently more and more such calls from fake investigators.

The 30-year-old Syrian from Linz received a call from an unknown number on Monday. A woman with an Indian accent told him in English that she was from the Federal Police and repeatedly stated that his identity had been misused. Asked for details, however, she cited money laundering and drug trafficking investigations as the reason for her call. She claimed to need the 30-year-old’s details to take the necessary steps. After initial hesitation, the Syrian gave his details and asked the woman for her name and service number. She gave her name, a service number and the file number in question. Hang up immediately. The 30-year-old was then connected to a male person. After a short conversation, however, he had such serious doubts that he hung up. Since such cases are currently increasing, the police urgently recommend ending such conversations or calls immediately!
