Marvel Studios and Disney are completely reviewing their production plans following the latest failures of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel can’t do it anymore. Since the record success of the Avengers Infinity War/Endgame diptych, the Maison des Idées has struggled to find its audience and has suffered several commercial failures in succession. Whether in series or film, adaptations of Marvel comics are no longer meeting the expected success.
But this year, Marvel decided to operate differently. The studio will only release one film in 2024 – Deadpool & Wolverine – and is expected to continue with a similar strategy for the years to follow by drastically limiting the number of projects produced, as Disney CEO Bob Iger recently explained during a a recent interview with investors. A new mode of operation affirmed once again by the co-president of Marvel Studios Louis D’Esposito to Empire.
We took a hit, we will come back stronger. Maybe when you overdo it, you dilute yourself a little. We won’t do this anymore. We have learned our lesson. Maybe two to three films per year and one or two series, as opposed to four films and four series.
Less quantity, more quality
With this strategy, Marvel Studios therefore seeks to focus on fewer projects to improve their quality rather than multiplying productions, at the risk of going astray. The goal now is to produce “two or three good films” according to Louis D’Esposito, an idea which should already be reflected with the release of Deadpool & Wolverine next July. And rather than meeting spectator expectations, Kevin Feige assures that this outsider position could on the contrary be beneficial to Marvel and allow them to surprise fans.
It’s nice to be able to rally around just one project this year. I am much more comfortable with this outsider position. I prefer to have the opportunity to surprise and exceed expectations. And it seems that the past year, which has not been ideal, has allowed us to achieve this.
Less quantity, more quality, this is the objective that Marvel is now setting itself. But before it can restore its image, the Maison des Idées will necessarily have to demonstrate good faith with these imminent productions. Deadpool & Wolverine first, then Fantastic Four next year. That being said, head to theaters in July to make sure Marvel is on the right track.
