New World: Patch to save the endgame relies on “WoW features”

New World’s endgame is set to be improved with the next major patch. The competency and plaster cast system was already presented in December 2021. A mutation system for endgame dungeons will now be linked to this, in which there will be a currency with the umbral fragments.

New World: New systems should make Endgame more attractive

Amazon Games took the first step towards changing the endgame in New World last year with the skill and plaster cast system. Here’s a brief summary of what’s behind it, as the changes can already be found on the live servers.

After reaching the maximum level (60) it will competency system visible. This is basically a more transparent variant of the “high watermark system”. You start with a proficiency value of 500 (the current limit is 590) for each individual gear slot. These stats determine the armor value of gear that you can loot from endgame activities. If you buy gear that is higher than your proficiency value, the game will choose the midpoint between your proficiency value and the armor value.

You can increase your skill value in a number of ways:

  • Use of a plaster cast
  • Complete an endgame dungeon
  • Random chance to increase from enemies and chests in endgame areas

What are plaster casts?

Plaster casts are made from different types of plaster that you get from activities like endgame dungeons, outpost storming, or Corruption events. You create plaster casts for specific gear slots and then get an item for that slot with a higher armor value than your current one, thereby increasing your proficiency stat as well.

Mutations and Umbral Shards

Since January 6, 2022, these two new systems have already been on the public test servers. The new limit for the competence value of the conventional kind is 600 there. From this value you have to Umbral Shards to be used. These shards can be used to splinter individual items except for one Armor value of 625 upgrade. Through this process, the competence value for the respective slot is always upgraded in parallel. The first evaluations only cost you a few shards, but the last steps up to the value of 625 consume thousands of them. A table with the current values of the test servers can be found at the New World Database.

You can get the shards in three ways:

  • By crafting an item with an armor value of 600 (requires a skill value of at least 600 for the slot)
  • By using a plaster cast on a slot with a proficiency value of at least 600
  • By completing dungeons with mutations

Mutations for dungeons

The mutations simply make dungeons harder. Mutations have different effects, which basically weaken you or strengthen the opponent. There are a total of ten mutation or difficulty levels on which you can complete dungeons. Of course, the level also increases the potential reward of shards. However, it also depends on how well you perform. The “dungeon rating” depends on your time, the number of enemies killed and how many times you have failed. According to the New World Database, you can exit the dungeon at level 10 with up to 6,000 shards.

That all sounds like a lot of work. Here’s something for in between:

The system should remind many MMO fans of the mythical+ dungeons in WoW, where so-called affixes increase the challenge and improve the reward at the end. The mutations are currently still on the New World test servers. There is no exact date for the live servers yet.
