This is what lies behind affirmations

Affirmations are a centuries-old practice rooted in various spiritual and philosophical traditions. People use positive, self-affirming phrases to develop a more optimistic outlook on life. “Affirmations are basically positive thoughts. Sentences that we say to ourselves, that we pronounce and with which we reinforce our feelings and thoughts,” explains Philipp Hausser. Especially in a fast-paced world in which many people are stressed and have a lot of tasks to do, affirmations can help you be more mindful of yourself.

The biggest difficulty in learning affirmations is breaking through old thought patterns, as Hausser continues: “It is often the case that we want to get rid of old habits and replace them with new habits or adopt new behaviors. This is for people themselves “It’s difficult because he’s a creature of habit. We’re comfortable with what we know.” Through affirmations you can then learn to work on yourself in order to react positively to daily difficulties. The principle, according to Hausser, follows a simple logic: “If I focus on the positive, I attract the same thing.”

However, according to Hausser, most people tend to formulate their wishes negatively from the outset, such as ‘I hope I don’t get sick’ or ‘That’s what I was missing’. Such negative formulations usually attract the opposite of the actual wish: you get sick.

“However, it is not a miracle pill made of magic words, but rather a support for our personal attitude on the way to our goal,” emphasizes the affirmation expert. Sentences like ‘I am strong and full of energy’ or ‘I face new challenges with confidence’ can only cultivate a positive attitude in the long term if someone “really deals with the positive statements – again and again, so that they become consolidated in us can”.

Your own path to mindfulness

There is no right or wrong, as Hausser emphasizes: “It is up to each person how they work with the affirmations and how they use them for themselves.” For example, you can say them out loud every day, listen to them in a podcast or hang them on sticky notes on the mirror or desk. “My readers often start the day with affirmations. They open the book and look at the affirmations of the day, and this impulse alone helps them to think positively and reflect. This also helps to get to know yourself better”.

However, the effect of affirmations does not become apparent immediately and requires patience to noticeably experience their positive effects. Hausser himself formulated simple rules in his book that can help: “Affirmations should be formulated in the present tense, not directed towards the future, but as if we have already achieved this goal today. They should be formulated positively, i.e. none Negatives like ‘not’ or ‘none’ should be included. And they should be as short as possible without us trying to cram everything into them.”
