New York fire kills at least 19 and injures dozens

The disaster struck a building in the Bronx neighborhood this Sunday. 200 firefighters were deployed to extinguish the flames.

At least 19 people have died and around 60 have been injured in a massive fire that broke out in New York City’s Bronx on Sunday, city mayor Eric Adams said. “This is going to be one of the worst fires we have ever witnessed in our time”, declared the elected, quoted by the New York Times.

About 200 firefighters were mobilized on site in the middle of the day. The firefighters identified “31 serious injuries to civilians”, they tweeted around 12:30 p.m. local time.

In footage circulating on social media, huge flames and thick black smoke billowed from a window of a multi-story building.

Another fire this week killed 12 people including eight children in a neighborhood in central Philadelphia.
