  • Marcel Hug wins the New York Marathon for the sixth time and is now the sole record winner.
  • Catherine Debrunner outclasses the competition at her premiere in the “Big Apple” and wins with a course record time.
  • Manuela Schär takes second place behind her unfettered compatriot.

Marcel Hug topped off his already perfect season at the New York Marathon. The Thurgau wheelchair athlete, who had already triumphed in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin and Chicago this year, also won in the “Big Apple” in 2023. Before Hug, no athlete had ever achieved six wins in all six major marathons in one year. With his sixth triumph in the US metropolis, the 37-year-old can now call himself the sole record winner.

Hug ran a lonely race in New York. At the 15 km mark he was already 20 seconds ahead of his closest competitor – the local Daniel Romanchuk. At the finish his lead was around four and a half minutes. With a time of 1:25:29 hours, Hug missed his course record set last year by a mere 3 seconds.

Debrunner with course record at premiere

The winner of the women’s marathon race also came from Switzerland. Catherine Debrunner delivered a demonstration of power. The woman from Thurgau broke away right at the start of the race and drove solo towards victory. Debrunner reached the goal at her premiere in New York after 1:39:32 hours. She beat Susannah Scaroni’s (USA) previous course record by more than three minutes.

Behind Debrunner, Manuela Schär, the next Swiss woman, crossed the finish line. The gap to Debrunner was considerable at over 8 minutes. The previous record holder Scaroni completed the podium.

Tola also with a course record

The runners’ race also ended with a course record. Ethiopian Tamirat Tola crossed the finish line with a time of 02:04:58 hours, improving Geoffrey Mutai’s (KEN) 12-year-old record by 8 seconds.

Hellen Obiri won the women’s race in 2:27:23 hours. The Kenyan was ahead of the Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey by six seconds after a thrilling duel on the final straight.
