We know him for having directed blockbuster films with Inception, Dunkirk, Interstellar and Tenet. After the Oppenheimer biopic, could Christopher Nolan get into horror films? At an event organized by the British Film Institute, Nolan actually said that he would like to make a horror film for different reasons. The quote is below:

Oppenheimer contains elements of horror, which I think is appropriate for the subject matter. I think horror films are very interesting because they rely on very cinematic devices, it’s really about a visceral response to things and so at some point I would like to make a horror film . But I think a really good horror movie requires a really great idea. And these are rare. So I haven’t found a story that lends itself to it. But I think it’s a very interesting genre from a cinematic point of view. (…) These are films which have a lot of darkness, a lot of abstraction. They have many qualities that Hollywood is usually very reluctant to put in films, but here it is allowed. Christopher Nolan, Variety

Even though we don’t know anything about Christopher Nolan’s next films at the moment, it could be that in the future the director turns to genre films “if he finds the right story that lends itself to horror” .

Christopher Nolan is one of the most respected filmmakers of his generation. Until recently, it was Denis Villeneuve who praised the creator of Interstellar. “It is for me an honor to introduce to you one of the best – in my humble opinion, I should say the best – and certainly the most important filmmaker of our time: Christopher Nolan” he said during a question-and-answer session after a screening. Before Oppenheimer, Nolan delivered many notable films, including The Prestige and of course Inception, the famous film with a five-star cast (Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard) whose ending is still debated today . For his part, Villeneuve has already declared that he loved Tenet, which he described in 2021 as “masterpiece”. “I was blown away by this film, I think it’s a film that is an incredible piece of cinematic achievement” he said.
