After a very convincing first film, but with some lengths, Dune by Denis Villeneuve is back with a transcendent second part.
3 years ago now, Dune by Denis Villeneuve shook cinemas around the world. With its 400 million dollars at the global box office and its 6 Oscars, it brought one of the most important science fiction stories of the 20th century up to date. Because initially, Dune is a novel published in 1965 by the writer Frank Herbert. 5 sequels were released over a period of 20 years and many other productions completed the universe, whether in book, film or video game. But the one that interests us is the latest, the new film by Denis Villeneuve. Critics are unanimous in their opinion: Dune Part Two is one of the greatest science fiction films ever made.
What is Dune Part Two about?
Direct sequel to the first film released in 2021, Dune Part Two follows young Paul Atréides, son of Duke Leto, played by Timothy Chalamet. In the first opus, the Duke receives the fiefdom of the desert planet of Arrakis from the leader of the Imperium. This desert planet is important to the empire because it is the only place where “the Spice”, a resource used for interstellar travel and which provides extraordinary mental faculties. After being betrayed, Paul crosses paths with the Fremen, natives of Arrakis, who have been waiting since time immemorial for the being who can save them from the yoke of the Imperium. The second film focuses more on Paul’s journey across the desert planet and his connection to the Fremen, including one in particular, Chani, played by Zendaya.
What does the press think?
As said previously, the press is unanimous about the film. The duty expresses it thus: “In a word, it’s a masterpiece”. The first point raised to praise Dune Part Two lies in the adaptation of the original work. In its review, Devoir states that “Villeneuve, even when he takes necessary (and sometimes daring) liberties, remains faithful to the spirit of Herbert”. Then, where the feature film shows all its grace, it is in its management of science fiction. In fact, all the components are perfectly oiled here, giving a result that satisfies everyone. The Guardian speak here “of great ambition, audacity and a true cinematographic language” demonstrated by Denis Villeneuve with his baby. The Press will even go so far as to title “The master of science fiction” to apostrophize the director. In short, Dune: Part Two is undoubtedly the film to see this year.
