Some directors are known for their habits and their manias. Among them, we remember, for example, Zack Snyder and his famous Director’s Cut, sometimes more popular than the films themselves. A point on which the director of Dune 2 is unlikely to agree.

Zack Snyder and his famous Director’s Cut

If you like the DC universe or action films with particularly polished images, you certainly know Zack Snyder. Originally known for his films Army of the dead (Dawn of the Dead in original version) and 300he also created some gems like Watchmen: The Guardians, Sucker Punch and even the animated film The Kingdom of Ga’Hoole before joining the DC cinematic universe. Since that moment, we have been able to see him at work with Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and finally Justice League, even if he ultimately had to hand over to Joss Whedon for a good part of the production of the latter. If he was already well known for his long versions before this moment, it is thanks to his famous “Snyder Cut” of Justice League that the general public discovered the director’s passion for revealing longer but also more complete versions of his own films.

Even after being excluded from the DC universe following the reboot of the latter initiated by James Gunn and Peter Safran, Zack Snyder has not abandoned his idea of offering several versions of his films. In any case, this is what he proved to us with his latest feature film available on Netflix. Indeed, while it has been out for several months now, Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire will be entitled to its long version. The latter, however, does not yet have a release date, and it is still impossible to know if it will arrive before Part 2 which is scheduled for April 2024. It remains to be seen whether it will be enough to catch up with the many errors in the film, as was the case for others like Batman v Superman or Justice League.

Denis Villeneuve does not plan to reveal cut scenes from Dune

If Zack Snyder is not the only one to offer long versions (we think for example of those of the trilogy The Lord of the Rings but also many other examples), other filmmakers prefer to stick to the cinema version. In any case, this is what we seem to be telling us Denis Villeneuve during an interview with our colleagues from Collider. While the first Dune was a huge success, the Canadian director is preparing to release the sequel to this adaptation with Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. On this occasion, he was able to answer many questions and in particular explain why he does not plan to release a long version for the Dune saga:

Sometimes I cut out scenes and I’m like, “I can’t believe I’m cutting this.” I feel like a samurai cutting open my stomach. It’s painful, so I can’t go back after this and create some sort of Frankenstein’s monster trying to revive things I’ve killed. It’s too painful. When it’s dead, it’s dead, and it’s dead for a reason. But yes, it’s a painful project, but it’s my job. The film prevails. I think I’m very strict in my editing. I don’t think about my ego, I think about the film.

You would have understood it, Denis Villeneuve has a completely opposite vision to that of Zack Snyder. While the Canadian director does everything to make an excellent film the first time, even if it means sacrificing a few moments that he personally really liked, the American director prefers to leave the choice to the viewer between a more accessible version and another more complete one, even if it means reduce the quality of the first. Of course, both philosophies are the same and everyone will certainly go their own way. In any case, don’t expect too much to be entitled to a long version of Dune or its sequel. Dune 2 is also expected in theaters on February 28and the first feedback from the press is excellent.
