In One Piece, most of the members of the Straw Hats have a lot of interactions with each other. However, Captain Luffy did not speak to this character for 7 years.
In One Piece, there are currently 10 characters in the Straw Hat Pirates. It’s still a lot, and it’s not easy for Oda to put interactions between all the members. For example, Captain Luffy didn’t speak to his carpenter, Franky, once.
Sad, but also a little logical
The last time Luffy and Franky spoke to each other was in chapter 703, in volume 72, during the Dressrosa arc. The Straw Hat Man seeks to recover the fire devil fruit, the mera mera no mi. It’s his late brother Ace’s and he wants to make it his own so it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. However, he cannot eat it himself: he is already the beneficiary of another devil fruit. He then asks his carpenter if he wants to eat it. The latter refuses, explaining that he prefers to avoid the compensation imposed by these fruits, namely the impossibility of swimming. The two men speak to each other again in chapter 729 through a snail and then radio silence until volume 97, or the Wano arc, the two men interact again.
So that’s 274 chapters, or 25 volumes, as well as half of the Dressrosa arc, as well as the entirety of Zou and Whole Cake Island where there is complete silence between the carpenter and the captain, so 7 years. We must still take into account that this is equivalent to only 10 days in the world of the manga and that for the Whole Cake Island arc, it is rather logical since Franky is not present. This still remains impressive in a manga like One Piece, where the interactions between the different characters are numerous.
Dragon Ball doesn’t do any better
If Franky and Luffy haven’t interacted together for 7 years (10 days in the One Piece world), this is not a first in the world of manga! In Dragon Ball, there are two characters who… have never spoken to each other. Indeed, the hero, Son Goku, never paid any attention to Chaozu. Ten Shin han’s sidekick appears at the same time as him, during chapter 131 of the Dragon Ball manga. During the other 388 chapters, Goku will not even pay a little attention to the little character. So of course, Chaozu is far from being the most interesting and important character in the story, but it’s still sad when we know that Goku addresses everyone and remains very close to all his friends, regardless of their power level.
