Netflix will have its work cut out for it to relaunch its supposed “Lord of the Rings” franchise. After three seasons, The Witcher seems to be in difficulty and the departure of Henry Cavill doesn’t help matters. However, the SVOD service is not giving up and is recruiting a Hollywood veteran… formerly an assistant to Steven Spielberg… to “save” the series.

The news had the effect of a bomb. Henry Cavill will no longer be the Witcher after season 3 of The Witcher series on Netflix. To replace him at short notice, the production set its sights on a Hollywood actor. Liam Hemsworth (younger brother of Chris Hemsworth – Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) takes over the role of Geralt of Rivia from season 4 after participating in the Hunger Games film saga with Jennifer Lawrence and Independence Day: Resurgence by Roland Emmerich. The authors justify this change of actor story-wise thanks to the concept of a multiverse present and then finally central in the books of the Polish novelist Andrzej Sapkowsk.

Filming for season 4 of The Witcher should begin in mid-April 2024, which allows us to learn more about the teams responsible for filming this new burst of episodes. Sergio Mimica-Gezzan is officially joining The Witcher series, and he’s not just anyone. The career of this American director born in Zagreb (the capital of Croatia) includes episodes of Heroes (2008-2009), Battlestar Galactica (2004-2006), Prison Break (2006), Halo Nightfall (2014) and more recently Raised by Wolves (2020) by Ridley Scott.
He also worked alongside one of the most active Hollywood directors still working. Sergio Mimica-Gezzan cut his teeth alongside Steven Spielberg himself on several feature films that marked the History of the 7th Art. He was an assistant director on Schindler’s List (1993), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Amistad (1997), Saving Private Ryan (1998), AI Artificial Intelligence (2001), Minority Report (2002) , Catch Me If You Can (2002) and finally The Terminal (2004).
Netflix has not yet clarified whether Sergio Mimica-Gezzan was only hired for season 4 or if he would also participate in season 5 of The Witcher with Liam Hemsworth in the lead role. As a reminder, the two seasons are filmed one after the other. Generally, directors direct two episodes per season. He could therefore leave his lasting mark on the franchise.
