Does “Twister” mean anything to you? Not the board game where you have to put yourself in impossible positions and touch the right colors, but the feature film released in 1996. It’s a disaster film directed by Jan de Bont (Speed 1 | 2) where a group must survive in the face of a series of devastating tornadoes in the United States… Yes, it’s not Shakespeare, and the critics of the time (63% on Rotten Tomatoes) also speak of a generic plot. However, it is also a question of a “high level” blockbuster! Obviously, it is this “big spectacle” dimension that helped it raise the nice sum of 495 million dollars worldwide. In 1996, it was the second highest score at the world box officein front of the handsome Tom Cruise and his first Mission Impossible.
Twister is back
If we’re talking to you about it today, it’s because the sequel to Twister, soberly called Twisters, will be released in theaters on July 17 (you can find the trailer in auto-play). Everything is directed by Lee Isaac Chung, multi-awarded for his semi-autobiographical film Minari, released in 2020 – who also held the camera for an episode of The Mandalorian (the man will also be there for the Star Wars Skeleton Crew series). Frankly, the images are quite appealing.
A breath of fresh air?
In February 2024, in an interview given to Entertainment Weekly, Chung confided his admiration for the first Twister. “I remember feeling how realistic that tornado was. I had never seen anything like it,” he explains. He also says he wants to preserve the essence of the 1996 film which, according to him, does not necessarily resemble a disaster. “For me, it felt like a feature-length adventure film (…) That’s something I wanted to keep with Twisters”. For her part, Daisy Edgar-Jones, who headlines alongside Glen Powell | Anthony Ramos, says there are “many nods to the original”. Come on, only two months to go before we find out all this.
