Having remained in Netflix’s closets for a long time, the new animated film from the creators of Shrek will soon appear. Disney-Pixar had better watch out.
After a year 2023 where Disney did not really shine, the firm intends to return in 2024 with two big releases, Vice-Versa 2 and Vaiana 2. However, a last minute competitor could well overshadow the big-eared firm. A former director from Dreamworks returns with a new animated film that sends heavy stuff, and it will be released on Netflix. Knights, magic and adventure are the key words of Spellbound.

Spellbound, a colorful film
Spelbound (or Bewitched in French) is an animated musical film directed by Vicky Jenson which will be released in 2024. It follows the story of Ellian, the young princess of the kingdom of Lumbria, a place known for being calm and peaceful. But overnight, a terrible spell breaks this time of peace, and what’s more, changes the king and queen into monsters. Ellian will then have to embark on a quest filled with dangers in order to save her kingdom and restore her parents to their appearance.. On the animation side, the Skydance studio worked hard to try to obtain the best possible rendering, which we could see with the first images released.
But Spellbound not only has its story and its animation to sell us dreams, the casting also sends the package. In the role of Ellian, we can find Rachel Zegler who played Maria in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, while to play the king and queen of Lumbria, Javier Bardem (Pirates of the Caribbean 5) and Nicole Kidman (Aquaman) will be there. But although this project was announced recently, it remained in Netflix’s closets for years. It is partly thanks to its director that it can finally see the light of day.
Vicky Jenson, the most famous of the unknowns
Even if you don’t know her or her face, you’ve probably seen at least one animated film she worked on. After having been one of the screenwriters of The Road to El Dorado (2000), she truly marked her name in the annals of cinema by being director and director of Shrek in 2001. As a reminder, Shrek is the first animated film to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. After that, Vicky Jenson directed Gang of Sharks and worked on the very popular Sinbad and Madagascar 2. In 2017, she proposed the pitch for Spellboundbut the film encountered many problems. Conflicts of interest with Paramount, change of name and pandemic, numerous obstacles hampered the smooth running of the film, before Netflix took back the rights last October. Spellbound is planned for 2024 and intends to overshadow all its competitors.
