I don’t define myself by my size

Ninia “LaGrande” Binias, 37, presenter, author and slam poet is 1.38 meters tall. Current status: That’s enough for her.

“Sometimes I catch myself thinking: five kilos less might be nice … Then I stop immediately and say to myself: You shouldn’t think that as a feminist. Most days I am very satisfied with that, what I see in the mirror. That’s a good thing, because I have so much fun showing myself!

Show diverse body image

I am a rampage pig. And I wouldn’t be if I found myself shit. I deal a lot with my appearance: What do I wear, which jewelry goes with it, which hairstyle …? This body deserves to be presented nicely. It’s extraordinary enough, so I decorate it the way I like it – regardless of whether others think it’s beautiful too. There are quite a few people who say things like, ‘This skirt is not doing anything for you, it makes your legs even shorter.’ Even if a skirt made my legs longer, I would still be tiny, so what the heck?

I would like a society in which we no longer comment on bodies without being asked and show a diverse picture of bodies. I want to show my son a good relationship with his own body or at least talk openly about my Struggles. I know it’s big bullshit to measure all bodies by the same measure. At 1.38 meters, I’m per se outside of the norm. Nevertheless, I work out my BMI, which cannot be right in the front and back, like with many others – already absurd, right?

My body is so special because it compresses the best of everything into a relatively small space. What I like about him is that he’s stronger than he looks. It carries me through a beautiful life really well. I would like to be bigger: The last time I thought that was two years ago, at a festival. A couple of men walked past me and patted my head. If I were 1.75, I thought, that wouldn’t be an issue, then I could also see the stage and just listen to music. But if a fairy godmother came and asked me: Would you like to be 1.75 meters tall? Then I would say: I’ll stay like this, thank you no. “
