Nintendo pursues Switch emulators one by one

After forcing Yuzu to shut down last month, Nintendo continues to chase Switch emulators, including shutting down their Discord servers.

Yuzu was just the beginning. After having wiped Yuzu off the map, the most popular Nintendo Switch emulator, the manufacturer is attacking its successors.

No threat of lawsuit, but intimidation techniques against the Discord servers of these emulators taking up the torch from Yuzu since last March.

Nintendo shuts down Suyu and Sudachi’s Discord servers

The two emulators in question, Suyu and Sudachi, launched as fork of Yuzu, namely projects derived from its source code. Despite all the precautions taken, mainly drawn from the lessons learned from the Japanese giant’s complaint, the future seems compromised: Suyu has already seen its GitLab page deleted following a DMCA request from Nintendo last month.

And in a new procedure revealed by the site The Verge, the two emulators in question woke up this morning to see their Discord servers closed following a new DMCA request. The platform justifies such action in view of the content shared on these servers which “which would violate intellectual property rights“.

Nebulous justifications

Such a procedure would mean that users would have shared cryptographic keys (prod.keys) allowing them to emulate Nintendo Switch games, or even precise instructions for obtaining them or even configuring the two emulators. However, these are the points that Suyu emphasized at its launch, not wanting to repeat the same mistakes as Yuzu in his time.

However, the developers would have had relatively few details on the reasons for these decisions while it is now impossible to verify whether the activity of these Discord servers violated the conditions of use of the platform, and by extension , the intellectual property of Nintendo.

According to information from The Verge, Suyu’s future seems compromised while dissension seems to be taking place within its development team which has suffered numerous departures in recent weeks. The less publicized Sudachi will, for its part, continue its development.
