The PS5 has only been on the market for around two years, but Sony is apparently already working on its successor. At least a new gamepad is being researched, as a new patent application from the manufacturer shows. Sony recently released a professional controller with the DualSense Edge, but the next model could have much more to offer.

As Gamerant reports, the patent shows possible features that the upcoming DualSense controller could offer. Accordingly, artificial intelligence could analyze the player’s behavior and give him or her help with difficult passages.

By lighting up button surfaces, gameplay actions could be suggested to support players. This should work for both the front buttons and the triggers.

Touchscreen instead of the touchpad

In addition, the instructions should also be able to be displayed on the controller’s touchpad, which also serves as a display. It would be conceivable that the gamepad would have a real display instead of a touch surface in the future.

The help system could be interesting for players who have a low frustration threshold. You don’t need to resort to cheats, but the controller gives you the support you need when mastering boss fights etc. A better gaming experience for people with disabilities would also be conceivable.

Of course, a filed patent doesn’t mean that these features will actually find their way into the upcoming controller. According to Statista, Sony filed almost 1,400 patents in 2022. So it’s unclear whether we’ll have the AI controller in our hands one day.
