1Password will allow the management and synchronization of passkeys between different ecosystems.

Gradually, websites and applications will replace passwords with passkeys (access keys) to authenticate and access their online accounts. Password managers do not want to miss the shift of this new technology and are working on their adoption by their platforms.

Store, manage and synchronize passkeys

This is the case with 1Password, one of the market leaders. Starting June 6, 2023, service users will be able to save and manage their passkeys, just as they already do for their passwords. Even better, 1Password will allow passkeys to be synchronized between different ecosystems, a feature that so far is not natively supported by the operating systems of different publishers.

Sharing a passkey from an Android smartphone to a Windows computer, for example, is an operation that must be performed manually, it is not done automatically. The service will thus respond to one of the main problems inherent to passkeys and help promote their adoption.

As a reminder, passkeys are linked to a specific device, which makes them more secure than passwords. The biometric unlocking method of your device validates your identity.

A third-party manager for cross-platform passkey synchronization

First, you will need to register for the open beta to take advantage of passkey support. In addition, mobile applications for Android and iOS will only be served later. You will need to install the 1Password browser extension on Chrome (and all browsers based on the Chromium engine), Firefox or Safari on your computer to benefit from it.

1Password accurate to The Verge that it will not be possible to replace his master password (the one that allows access to the manager, and therefore to all of his passwords) with a passkey with the update scheduled for next month. But such a function should be deployed shortly after, during the month of July.

1Password offers easy-to-use, advanced apps that work on computers (Windows, MacOS, and Chromebooks) and smartphones (iOS and Android). Its Watchtower feature helps you identify and change weak, reused, or compromised passwords. Its “roaming mode” remains original and practical if you go to countries that are a little too curious with your personal data. In case of difficulties, you can contact the technical support (by email, Twitter or chat) which is quite responsive and precise. Finally, 1Password is a good manager for a family or a group of professional users. For personal and general public use, other managers are free and more suitable.
