Bad decision slows down Bayern women after a lightning start

FC Bayern Munich got off to a perfect start in the Champions League game against Ajax Amsterdam, but then a bad decision robbed the leaders of the Women’s Bundesliga. In the end there is an unnecessary loss of points.

The FC Bayern Munich footballers have dropped points on their hoped-for route to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The German champions couldn’t get past a 1-1 (1-1) draw against Ajax Amsterdam in the third group game. National striker Lea Schüller had already given the hosts the lead on the Bayern campus in the second minute. Chasity Grant visibly unsettled the Munich team with her equalizer in the 38th minute.

Coach Alexander Straus’s team opened with a 2-2 draw against AS Roma and then won 1-0 at Paris Saint-Germain. The Norwegian not only had to do without Klara Bühl (muscle injury), but also had to replace Magdalena Eriksson after a good 20 minutes.

Annoying for the Bayern women: A goal by Linda Dallmann was incorrectly disallowed due to an alleged offside position by provider Katharina Naschenweng (27th) – there is no video evidence for the women. Schüller had a great chance to add to the score in the early stages – but the striker missed after a free-standing corner from ten meters.

The English European champion Georgia Stanway missed a great chance to take the lead in the second half in front of 2,500 spectators. FC Bayern didn’t really press after the break, but then they increased the pressure. Ajax goalkeeper Regina van Ejik deflected a powerful shot from Schüller onto the crossbar. The second leg in the Netherlands is next Wednesday. Eintracht Frankfurt’s women had lost 1-0 at Benfica Lisbon the day before. VfL Wolfsburg missed the group stage.
