While 5G is still in its infancy, several companies are working on its successor like Nokia. And according to the CEO of the equipment manufacturer, 6G will officially enter commercial markets in 2030.
While 5G is slowly but surely starting to become more popular, many manufacturers and equipment suppliers are already working on the development of the new generation of mobile network. This is particularly the case of Huawei, which plans to launch the first 6G infrastructures by 2030.
For its part, Samsung has opened a whole new research division dedicated to 6G, while Apple is looking for specialized engineers to design new wireless communication systems as well as to prepare for the transition to 6G.
As for the European Union, it is already preparing the ground since it has commissioned Nokia and Ericsson to develop 6G technology, for a launch set once again for 2030. According to the first estimates of the two equipment manufacturers, the speeds could climb to 1 TB/s, 8,000 times the maximum transfer speed offered by 5G.
Nokia plans to launch 6G by 2030
Regarding this launch window, Nokia seems confident. Its CEO, Pekka Lundmark, recently announced that he believes that 6G will officially enter commercial markets in 2030. The boss made the remarks during a round table at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this week.
Separately, the CEO said it won’t be smartphones that will bring 6G into the next decade. According to him, smartphones will gradually be replaced by devices connected directly to our bodylike what Neuralink promises with its implants in the human brain.
“Until then, it is certain that the smartphone as we know it today will no longer be the most common interface. Many of its devices will be integrated directly into our bodies,” assured Pekka Lundmark.
Note that in the race for 6G, China has already taken a head start by launching the first 6G satellite into orbit in November 2021. With this satellite, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China intends to study the behavior of 6G technology in space.
