Six months after their birth in Morocco, the Malian nonuplets are in good health. Still under surveillance in a medical apartment in Cassablanca, the family hopes to return home soon, to Timbuktu, where they are from.
May 4, 2021 is a date that the parents, Halima Cissé and Abdelkader Arby, and the medical team of Dr. Yazid Mourad will remember all their lives. Indeed, it is that of the birth of nine babies, five girls and four boys, born very premature by cesarean section at 30 weeks gestation. A first global, which took place at the Aïn Borja private clinic in Casablanca, Morocco.
Obstetrician-gynecologist Yazid Mourad, who performed the operation, had never seen it. “It was a shock”, told journalist Amélie Tulet, special correspondent in Casablanca for RFI. And for good reason. Initially, only seven newborns had been detected on ultrasounds, performed during Halima Cissé’s pregnancy. The surprise was therefore of size by discovering nine small heads. A medical team of 30 people were mobilized to welcome them, reported The Observer of Morocco and Africa.

Nonuplets are healthy
Today, six months have passed and the nonuplets are doing very well. In a statement, the Malian Minister of Health and Social Development made it known.
“For us, the challenge was to keep them alive, but above all that they live without sequelae. so far, all neurological exams are good“, announced the pediatrician Khalid Mseif last August in another interview with RFI. Babies are strong, “they survived to all complications of extreme prematurity “, added the doctor.
The newborns have since been discharged from the clinic. They are currently in a medical apartment in Morocco, with their two parents watching over them, surrounded by nurses who come day and night.
A homecoming planned for the nonuplets?
For the moment no return date has been set for nonuplets. A few weeks ago, in mid-October, the Malian Minister of Health and Social Development, Diéminatou Sangaré, came to see them in Casablanca. “to assess the situation and prepare for the return” at home, in Timbuktu in Mali, where they come from, reveals our colleagues.
In any case, the parents of the nine babies, who also have an older daughter, are eager to return. “Yes, I miss my homeland, my oldest daughter, my family and friends, confesses Halima Cissé to RFI. But only time will tell when we will be able to return according to the evolution of the state of health of the children “.
