Now in the Tyrolean snow – Northern bald ibises missed the flight to Tuscany

The poor bald ibises! While a large part of the population has flown to winter quarters in Tuscany, some birds in the Salzburg / Tiroler Unterland area were surprised by the snow and threaten to starve to death. Now the Waldrapp team is asking the population for information.

“Unfortunately, a handful of the animals were late. They wanted to cross the mountains, but that was no longer possible because of the snowfall, ”says team member Daniela Trobe. We know very well about the birds’ recent fate because some of them are equipped with transmitters. “Unfortunately, the batteries don’t last long at these temperatures. Now we are also dependent on visual reports. “Who has seen birds? The most likely is a stay in the Saalfelden area as far as St. Johann in Tirol. “With the current snow depth or when the ground is frozen, the northern bald ibises can no longer find earthworms or insects,” adds Trobe. Anyone sighting the conspicuous birds is asked to contact the “Waldrapp team” to try to catch them: 0660/1427204.
