Traffic light tips declare agreement on gas price brake

The traffic lights agree on how they want to get the consumer under control of the rapidly increasing gas prices. According to reports, instead of a gas levy that had been planned for a long time, there should be a gas price brake. In a PK convened at short notice, Scholz, Habeck and Lindner declare the agreement.

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck and Federal Minister of Finance Christian Lindner will give a press conference at 2 p.m. called at short notice on “current issues relating to energy supply in Germany”. The Federal Chancellery announced that Scholz would be connected to the appointment. You can follow the press conference live here.

The “Handelsblatt” had previously reported that the federal government is about to reach an agreement in its internal negotiations on a gas price brake. Accordingly, a “low three-digit billion amount” will be made available for the gas price brake. Overall, the rescue package amounts to 150 to 200 billion euros.

The gas price brake should therefore be financed via the Economic Stabilization Fund (WSF). This was set up during the corona pandemic to help companies. He had actually expired in the summer, now he should receive additional funds. The WSF will receive new credit authorizations for the gas price brake, the newspaper said, citing government circles.

There is no need for a supplementary budget. However, the Bundestag must decide again that an exception to the debt brake can be made via the emergency clause in the Basic Law. The Ministry of Finance declined to comment on individual reports when asked.
