Keen to advance its ranges of graphics cardsNVIDIA has decided to end the production of so-called GTX GPUs.

At the end of last year, a persistent rumor reported a major change within the NVIDIA team. A change likely to shake up the company’s GPU offering.

Several sources have actually mentioned the end of production of the GTX range with the direct consequence of the omnipresence of RTX GPUs within the brand’s graphics cards. It is today confirmed.

19 years ago, the first “GTX”

Initiated in June 2005 with the release of the GeForce 7800 GTX, the GTX range will therefore not have celebrated its 20th anniversary. At the time, NVIDIA only used this name as a suffix for certain models.

From the time of the 7800, the idea is therefore simply to distinguish the GS, GT and GTX which constitute an increase in power for the same GPU. Very quickly, however – starting with the GeForce 200 series – NVIDIA decided to add the suffix “GTX” to the GeForce name. It is then inseparable from the name of all the graphics cards launched by the American company.

From June 2008, for example, we find the GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280 to launch the new range from NVIDIA. Little by little, generation after generation, we even come to talk about GTX to designate NVIDIA cards as we also do with the term GeForce.

The generalization of ray tracing

However, in 2018, NVIDIA is changing its approach and the GTX acronym is no longer the only one used by the brand. Eager to highlight capacities in calculation ray tracing of its GPUs, NVIDIA introduces the acronym “RTX”.

On September 20, 2018, a first card was released, the GeForce RTX 2080 and, very quickly, the GTXs were no longer perceived as entry-level models, reserved for less fortunate players. The GeForce GTX are no longer confined to the “first price” segment of the NVIDIA catalog with the GeForce GTX series 16 range made up of models like the GTX 1650 and GTX 1660.

Relayed by our colleagues from VideoCardzan NVIDIA roadmap no longer makes the slightest place for these GTX whose production is interrupted during the first quarter of 2024. Stocks may last a few more weeks, but everything suggests that these GTX cards are therefore experiencing their last months of commercial existence.
